Costa Rica is a kind of country with amazing fishing opportunities both inland and off the coast. The country boasts their world class sport fishing that is stable and is very solid. The variety of fish is spectacular as the major sport fishing companies and various tour groups have a certain policy. This was done since Costa Ricans know how important it is to have a sustainable tourism and is focused on the conservation of the important fish species. If you plan to have Costa Rica Vacation in Costa Rica Real Estate, take into consideration fishing in Caribbean. Pacific coast is known for having black and blue marlins. The Caribbean is also rich in sailfish and dorados. Moreover, the waters of southern zone of the country offer fishermen the opportunity to fish both inshore and offshore anytime of the year. So if you and your friends plan to have Vacations in Costa Rica, December and May are being considered best for sailfish and June to September being the best for marlins.

Costa Rica Vacations

Sport fishing areas are within a short distance to one another. Thus the country is offering several tours and travel companies that can arrange your sport fishing vacation. Tourists can access to boat charters. Before going to fishing make certain of the season, wind currents and other weather conditions. It is important to know that along the Pacific coast fish move seasonally. The best season is from May to September. The best catches are in the Playa Flamingo, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, and Playa Carrillo. The best places to fish in the Caribbean are Barra del Colorado. The best time to catch in the Puerto Jimenez, Puerto Quepos, and Golfo Dulce is from November to March. The Golfo Dulce is one of the few unique gulfs where the water at its end is deeper than its mouth. However, inland fishing is very popular in the Laguna de Arenal specifically near the Arenal Volcano. Here you will experience catches of rainbow bass. Thanks to the volcanically created seamounts that rise hundreds of feet above the ocean floor which is perfect breeding and feeding ground for the bait fish that attract larger fish that are the food source for tuna, sail, and marlin. The jungle that covered the mountains on the eastern shore falling to the edge of the water and beyond provide many deep holes where you are given an opportunity to get inshore fishing after going to large snapper below.

Tropical sport fishing is located in the Quepos, one of the hot spots for the sport fishing on the Central Pacific coast. Costa Rica’s Pacific coast offers anglers the world’s greatest sea sport fishing adventures. Catch marlin, dorado, tuna, tarpon, and roosterfish for the year round. The month of February is some of the fantastic fishing seasons. At the end of January a record breaking amount of marlin and sailfish is caught in the seas. A whooping of 613 sailfish and 11 marlin are caught in a three day period basis.

Costa Rica is rapidly becoming the first choice destinations for Europeans and North Americans who are seeking affordable and quality dental care and cosmetic surgery. In the Costa Rica Medical arena you can find the top dentists and cosmetic surgeries trained in the best schools and performing procedures at a fraction of the cost that you would pay in Europe or United States. Some 750,000 Americans sought medical service in health care in Costa Rica due to affordable Costa Rica Medicine. This boosted Medical Travel to Costa Rica that attracted many people from well developed countries in the world to seek the services in the country.

Medical arena at Costa Rica

Costa Rica development started slowly. Traditionally the tourism here in Costa Rica has been on a small scale with small family that run the lodges and hotels. But this is changing quite quickly. Development started quickly in the country. Infrastructure development is the most important part of the host in order to make the visitors and tourists comfortable and make them really feel at home. When we talk about development such as infrastructure and land development, we salute those people who built it with their capacities and resources. And with the financial benefits from the increase in the tourism, new operations are starting up all the time. The number of medical tourists visiting the country has doubled and now approximately 1.5 million people visit to Costa Rica each year.

Development in the southern region is beginning to emerge. A new hospital has recently been built with a new international airport to be coming soon. Moreover, several new resorts and marina developments are also planned in the area. Costa Rica has a very good medical infrastructure both public and private hospitals and clinics and excellent surgeons and doctors all trained in Europe and US and medical insurance is available for foreigners at very low cost compared to other countries. Guanacaste has been through major transformations as the Government of Costa Rica has been focusing on the major infrastructures like a new CIMA Hospital which includes medical practice offices, a commercial section with studio hotel and restaurants specifically targeting retirees and medical patients. The hospital is close to the international airfield that has become the heart of the expansion of Guanacaste as a tourist destination in the last 10 years. The private surgery will not only cater the locals but to growing foreign customers as well who are looking for quality care. Moreover, through the countless non public stockholders, Guanacaste has seen the enlargement and creation of everything from orthopedic centers, non public surgery hospitals, cosmetic surgery spas, recovery centers, psychological fitness centers, and more. Globally commissioned medical care is the final piece of the Guanacaste puzzle and defines the giant leap in the marketability of the area both as retirement and medical travel destination but also as the true long term alternative lifestyle choice for many North Americans.

Costa Rica boasts about having more teachers than policemen. Many of the rulers of Costa Rica have been educators as well and they have placed great importance in the expansion of the primary and secondary education even in the most remote areas in the country. Thanks to the ongoing reforms, Costa Rica has a 93% literacy rate.

Schools at Costa Rica

Primary education in most Costa Rica Schools last for almost six years while Costa Rica High Schools might be five or six years, the first being the academic and the latter years are for technical or professional. At the end of the high school, the Costa Rican students will receive a title in Science. The system is applied to all public Schools in Costa Rica. But there are also private grammar school and high schools which utilize European and American system. There are lots of articles that assure the integrity of the system. Jose Maria Castro is the first elected president of Costa Rica and was also a teacher and because of his reform and the past president, in 1869 Costa Rica has become the first country in the world where education became obligatory and free. This fact is expressed by the Article 78 of the Costa Rican Constitution. In Article 79, it guarantees the freedom of education. This means that educational institutions may confer grammar and high school degrees. Moreover, students in public schools have to wear their official uniform in order to lessen the economic and social distinctions between students. All of these preserve the conservation of an institution that is considered sacred in Costa Rica. In fact, one of the presidents in Costa Rica declared the teaching of Computer Science and English to be mandatory in all the public schools in the country. This signifies the training of 500 teachers and the huge expense on the part of the government.

Apart from public schools, there are many private schools options in Costa Rica. There are North American, German, and Japanese Schools. The explosion of private schools and foreign schools in the country have given the opportunity to lessen the overcrowding public schools and has provide an alternate educational system for those students who can afford going to private schools.

Country Day is an American School in Costa Rica that was founded in San Jose in 1963 and caters to students ranging from kindergarten through high school. Country Day School in Costa Rica is one of the best known American schools in Costa Rica that offers top notch education. This school is meant for students who can speak English as their first language even though some students do not know how to speak English are accepted on a conditional basis. This school is located in Escazu close to the Escazu Central Park and there is also a campus in our region of Guanacaste in the town of Brasilito. Country Day School Guanacaste was founded in 2002 and has a beautiful campus with great facilities and also offers boarding for students.

La Paz Community School is a newer school in our area of Guanacaste in Flamingo Beach. La Paz was founded in 2007 and offers great education to students from Pre-K to 11th grade. The school is completely 100% bilingual and is also a non-profit school that offers scholarship programs to students to cannot otherwise afford a private school education. There are currently 180 students enrolled in La Paz from Costa Rica, USA, Europe and beyond. La Paz recently completed its campus for the upper grades and continues to expand as the need for quality education is in demand.

There are several options if you are considering to Obtaining Residency in Costa Rica. The requirements to enter to Costa Rica depends on your country of nationality. Generally, citizens from United States, Canada, and European countries do not require a visa to enter the country. Those citizens can enter Costa Rica with their valid passports and remain in the country for up to 90 days. If you are under 30 or 60 day category then the law will allow you to apply for an extension of up to 90 days. If you have a 90 day visa then the law does not allow you to apply for an extension unless you leave the country and re-enter to obtain another tourist visa in Costa Rica. All residency applicants are processed by the Costa Rican Department of Immigration which in turn overseen by the ministry of the Public Security and Police.

Obtain Residency in Costa Rica

Costa Rica Residency grants foreign nationals from other countries the legal right to live in the beautiful region of Cots Rica. If you are planning to permanently relocate yourself to Costa Rica, you should become a legal resident of the country. There are two ways to obtain permanent residency. First is through a first degree relation to a Costa Rican citizen or by holding a temporary residency for a period of almost three years. Permanent residency must be renewed every 2 years but this does not expire. A permanent resident may legally work in Costa Rica. A first degree relationship includes children less than 25 years of age and parents of Costa Rican citizen, siblings or parents of disabled Costa Rican citizens, and minor siblings of Costa Rican citizens.

Temporary residency allows the foreigners the right to live in Costa Rica for a period of time, usually from one to five years. The most common types of temporary residency are the annuity holder, investor, and retirees. Temporary residents are permitted to live, collect income from businesses, and own a business. As a temporary resident, you are subject to annual requirements and you may have to exchange a required amount of dollars each month. If you are planning for Costa Rica Retirement and have a pension or investment income then you can qualify for Pensionado Residency. This kind of program is governed by the New Immigration Law which confers residency status as pensioned based residency or investment and income based residency.

Tourists from Canada, United States, and many European countries are permitted to enter Costa Rica for up to 90 days only even without a visa. After 90 days, they are required to go outside the country for 72 hours. Perpetual tourists are the tourists who live in Costa Rica and renew their entrance permit every 90 days. Perpetual tourist is considered not illegal but it is not a form of legal residency. Perpetual tourists have limited services like you do not have permission to access to their public services like the public health system. And perpetual tourists are not allowed to legally work in the country.

Building our Ocean View dream home in Costa Rica Part I by Becky Clower

It has been my dream since the day I moved to Costa Rica to own an ocean view home. Fast forward five years and my dream has finally become a reality. Two weeks ago we broke ground on our home on an ocean view lot in a small development near Bahia de los Piratas (Pirate’s Bay) located just south of Playa Conchal in northwest Guanacaste.

What took my husband and I the longest was the part of actually visualizing what our perfect home was. For me, it wasn’t about having the biggest house out there (just more to clean!). It was about having a great layout and good use of space. Other important factors included making the home energy efficient and taking advantage of the elevation and ocean breezes. Of course, the views are beautiful, and the positioning of the home on the lot (which is sloped) was also of high importance to get the maximum views.

I would say that the architectural plans took about 4 months in total. Even to this day we are still changing little things here and there. I think we are 99% there. The most difficult thing was choosing a builder. At first, I made the (almost) mistake of having a family member build my home. This is a cousin that I respect and has a lot of building experience. However, he was based in San Jose and had too many things going on to help us in the end. I believe things happen for a reason. Although I was initially annoyed by the delay this caused, in the end, I am really happy with the builder we chose. They are a local builder who has done many area projects and has a good reputation for getting the job done right and on time. We opted for steel frame construction method as opposed to the typical concrete block you see in most of Costa Rican homes. Steel frame is a rather new concept for residential homes in Costa Rica. Advantages including quicker build time, lighter construction weight (less slab work), and energy efficiency (doesn’t radiate heat like concrete block), were taken into consideration. The company building our home is Frame Projects based in the Playa Potrero area: http://www.frame.cr/

The steel structure is imported from Canada and is a quality building material that resists corrosion (coated in pure zinc). Other energy saving and/or eco-friendly features of the home: Self-contained waste water treatment system by Eloy that will also provide irrigation using grey water, solar technology for the pool pump, double insulated windows, and volume ceilings.

One negative about building our house: Our lot has a slope, and because of that, we had to put in two very large retention walls. Between the two retention walls, we had to spend about $26,000 for the materials, labor and site work. I didn’t think we would have to spend that much, but at least we know that our house isn’t going downhill! Retention wall work is something that you need to keep in mind when building on the side of a mountain when you don’t have a level building pad, which is rather common with ocean view homes. The retention walls were built using the Keystone block system, which provides a greater strength and virtually no use of poured concrete.

This is part one of our story and we’ll continue to keep you posted. Ground breaking was January 17, 2012, top of the dry season in Guanacaste. We hope to spend next Christmas in our new home.

Costa Rica is a favorite spot for waterfall rappelling, surfing, and whitewater rafting and one of the adrenaline junkie’s favorite, the kite surfing or also known as the Para kiting. In Costa Rica, the winds and waves that go perfectly together to give thrill-seekers the best way to enjoy air and water. There’s a good number of kite surfing in Costa Rica as well as kite surfing schools for those who are just starting off. The Kite School, established in the year 2000 is the first to operate in the Central America. These courses range from beginner to advanced classes. You can teach them a maximum of four people for the beginners. You can also choose for private lessons if desired in a class. The school will supply the equipment during the courses. If you dare, try braving the waves and hold on to the Costa Rica Adventures. With the cutting edge equipment, friendly locals, expert guides and divine beaches to catch the best breaks, kite surfing is becoming the world’s favorite. If you are a beginner, Costa Rica is a great place to visit. The beaches are known by which you do not have to worry about boats and tourists. The climate in Costa Rica is suitable for kite surfing.

Costa Rica Adventure

Bahia Salinas, Costa Rica is on the northwestern corner of Costa Rica. It is located within 5km of the Nicaraguan border. Good flat water sailing spot with the 80 degree water and side shore trade winds. If you bring some booties and small kites, it can really tip there. There is also some great kite surfing to be at a popular surfing break called the witches rock. It blows directly offshore but since you need a boat to get there, you’ve got somebody to retrieve you. Bahia Salinas is extremely windy. Winds average between 15 to 30 knots in the dry season but it can easily blow 30 or 40 knots. Due to the surrounding hills, the wind can be very gusty.

The Costa Rica Tourism offers wonderful beach and lake locations to enjoy both kite surfing and kite boarding. Here you will be able to find spots most of the year with the excellent wind conditions. The weather is good for the beginners who are just new about the sport and veterans who want to have a good kite surfing sessions.

According to Costa Rica Adventure Tours that October through May is the best time to consider since this is the windy season. You will likely be the kite boarder out there while you will have fewer hours of wind but it could be the right combination for one of a kind adventure. Organized riding guidelines have enabled kite surfers to return to sport their favorite places. Kite surfing has become one of the few attractions now offered by many beaches and resorts. Golfo Dulce, with winds from 12-15 miles an hour is a very safe place to learn versus the north of the country. The thermal wind starts to blow around 11 in the morning and quits around 4 in the afternoon. The best wind is from December to August.

Just 2.5 kilometers south of Taramindo separated by a headland, Playa Langosta is a great place to go to for some quiet and peace. Close enough to the business of its neighbor, but is still far enough to retreat from an active day. The mostly rocky beach has some of the sandy patches perfect for swimming the whole day. The beach includes nesting sea turtles and other wildlife such as monkey playing in the trees. Surfing is common in the place but it also includes reef shore breaks. Riptides are found while you surf so swimming is best during tide pools. The place is a great place to go for some privacy and relaxing getaway as well. Since the town is located near the mouth of an estuary, the place is popular for its surf break for those people who love and enjoy surfing in a more serene and quite environment. Many of the tourists come to the place to immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty of the town. However, be warned that the Playa Langosta can get pretty crowded during high season when locals and tourists come here to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The place will definitely capture your heart with its extraordinary wildlife and pristine beaches. Playa Langosta is so perfect in any retreat for any group of people and the place is worth visiting especially if you happen to be in the area of Tamarindo.

Costa Rica is becoming the destination for many of the people who wants to retire. With the predictable climate, a stable government and affordability to live, Costa Rica is quickly becoming the destination for those retirees who wants to stretch their savings. Costa Rica retirement is an ideal country to retire to. With the affordable living such as housing, a politically stable government that do not require for a military, great weather and easily accessible, Costa Rica is perfectly positioned to welcome retirees all over the world. Local food in the country is relatively not expensive. Fruits that are grown in Costa Rica are readily available. One of the major draws to retire in Costa Rica is their health care system. Their public sector insurance structure is available as well as the private plan. The plans include prescriptions, doctor visits and hospital care. Costa Rica is indeed an inexpensive country. The prices in San Jose are the second lowest of any cities in America and the cost of goods and services is among the lowest of any cities in the world. Housing in the middle class Costa Rica is substantially less than what it does in the United States.

Retirement Costa Rica

With a land area of 51.100 km2 and 589.000 km2 of the territorial waters, Cost Rica is considered as one of the greatest biodiversity in the world. Its geographic position, its mountain system and two coasts which provides the numerous and varied microclimates are some of the reasons why there is a good natural wealth in the country, both in terms of species and ecosystems. There are more than 500,000 species that are found in the region of Costa Rica, 300,000 of which are insects. The 25% of the country’s territory is under the category of protection. The private sectors have created many private reserves dedicated to ecotourism and research. There are also bodies of the government that ensures the long term conservation of the country’s protected areas and natural resources that is why the country is named as Costa Rica green.

Almost 10,000 Costa Ricans are over 90 years of age and that is according to the recent demographic date from the American Population Center. In Nicoya, you can find 100 years old women chopping firewood and washing clothes by their hand compared to the men in Europe or US. These people are the world healthiest, longest-lived people and many researchers believed that their long life expectancy is due to their dry climate, low stress life, their outdoor lifestyles that are full of sunshine, a simple low calorie diet, vegetables with plenty of rice, corn, and beans, low in animals with lots of fresh fruits, and always a light dinner. Costa Ricans also drink the local water in the region that has a high content of calcium. Costa Ricans also know how to work, they have no desire or plans to retire and they wanted to work all their lives, they have a strong sense of purpose, they are positive thinkers, and they do not worry too much and they have faith.

The gateway to the beaches in Guanacaste province, the new airport expansion with an investment of $41 million is expected to create a more efficient and expedient travel process for the passengers at the country’s one of the largest airports. At the 23,000 square meters, the structure dwarfs its current building in both capabilities and sizes. The Liberia Airport expansion will definitely help increase the Guanacaste tourism dollars of the region, create roughly 100 new jobs for the locals, and provide a solution to the notorious Liberia airport lines that sometimes stretch outside the terminal. The passengers will be entering the country with an air-conditioned immigration area which is located downstairs where 17 agents will be on staff to usher the tourists in and out of the checkpoints. Luggage will also be collected in the next room from two baggage claim carousels. From there, the bags will be screened for prohibited agricultural products. One more stop at the customs and the passengers are all out the door and on their way to enjoy their visit to the beautiful Costa Rica.

In the new Liberia Airport, the outgoing passengers will enter the airport from the northern façade which features the new 30 check-in counters, a bank, money changer, and a mini market. After showing the travel documents and boarding passes to the airport security, tourists will go through the security barrier that is much wider than the previous one. The new checkpoint of the airport is equipped with the high caliber equipment including the five X-ray machines and three metal detectors. The second-floor businesses are to include money exchange station, restaurant, and various shopping spaces for duty free store, jewelry stores, and art gallery. Wireless internet connection will also be available throughout the building.

Guanacaste Costa Rica has some of the best sport fishing in the world with tuna that can dive hundreds of feet straight down, giant marlin that can trip a reel in a loud flash, and sailfish blessed with many colors.

Guanacaste Costa Rica Villas

One of the reasons why Guanacaste fishing is very popular is mainly because of the variety of fish species in abundance throughout the Pacific waters. These fish include tuna, marlin, dorado, sailfish, sea bass, red snapper, and many more. With a wide variety of game fish found in the Pacific Ocean, fishing can be an exciting sport. The waters of Guanacaste are credited for being most fertile and consistently producing in the country. The northern Pacific coast offer 78 to 85 degree temperature on the open air. This is the ideal setting for the big game deep sea fishing, cruising, and yachting.

One of the best places to go fishing and catch a bite is at the Playa Ocotal. This is a small beach which is excellent as a fishing destination with a number of tours operating in the area. The Playa Brasilito is also a great place for sport fishing. Playa Flamingo is being developed as a major boating and sport fishing destination of the region. Now, this beach is a must visit for some sport fishing with plenty of fishing charters on hand around it. The Papagayo Gulf Fishing Charters is the place where you will find the best blue water fishing anywhere in the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The Guanacaste Fishing Charters offers you to catch many fish species all year round. While you are in Guanacaste tours, they will teach you how to catch fish. Add to the excellent weather conditions of Guanacaste, one can enjoy sport fishing off the Guanacaste coast all day long. The Gulf of Papagayo provides some of the Costa Rica’s best year round for sport fishing action for over 25 different varieties of game fish. The best sailing is from the month of April until the month of September. Billfish are the Guanacaste’s biggest attraction.

These very days it would appear that the best luck is being had off in the northern Pacific coast of Guanacaste. Sport fishing in the region has always been good for business in Guanacaste. Every year, the big game fishermen flock to the sea of Guanacaste for the thrill of landing some of the incredible catches while enjoying the warm and sunny place of Guanacaste.

Costa Rica is a small country in terms of area but there is a lot going on here in terms of their weather. Costa Rica is a kind of tropical country, situated between 8 and 11 North latitude which is fairly close to the equator. Although in the mountains above 200 m you can get cooler temperatures, the average annual temperature of the country lies between 21.7 Celsius and 27 Celsius. The weather of Costa Rica is basically divided into two major seasons: the dry and rainy season. Throughout the year, there are no great temperature variations between the two seasons. The average temperature of the country varies approximately around 10 degrees from one season to another season.

Guanacaste weathers

The climate of Guanacaste is highly seasonal. Guanacaste experiences little rain and consistent rain during November to April and experiences a rainy season during late May and November. Guanacaste experiences a rainy season and rains from a few hours to few days. The main reason for the diversity in the weather of Guanacaste is due to the various elevations at which the different parts of the region are located. As an example, Guanacaste weather has a dry arid climate as it sits on the lowlands. The perfect time to do Guanacaste vacations is actually year around. No matter if you visit during rainy season or during dry season, both seasons provide magnificent advantages. The rainy season brings the trees into bloom with explosions of fragrances and colors, while the dry season provides plenty of sunshine. The hills are carpeted by the green trees.

The best time to visit Guanacaste is from December to April since this is the dry season of the region. In this season, tourism is heavier. This means that it is difficult to find good attractions and prices because they are often crowded. The place of Guanacaste is widely known for having warm and sunny days all year around with occasional rains in the late afternoon during the rainy season. The dry season is intense in Guanacaste with no rainfall for several months.

Rainy season on the other hand is a good time to visit Guanacaste since everything starts to turn green, flowers start to blossom, and you can relax after a lot of activity in the morning with the melody of nature and rain. This season is more characterized as rainy during end of May until the mid of November. The only time to avoid in Guanacaste might be the mid September to the end of October when longer of periods of rains are really common. At this season, usually the mornings are hot and sunny while the afternoons are characterized by heavy showers that start around 2 or 3. Surprisingly, rainy season is a kind of season wherein you can enjoy the bike rides, beaches, and horse riding. This season is also perfect for rafting. At this time you can also visit the Guanacaste’s Gold Coast. So basically all the outdoor activities are possible during this season.
