Guanacaste is HOT. I love Guanacaste however it is really nice to have a place close by where we can cool off and enjoy a totally different climate such as the area around Lake Arenal, which is about a 3 hour drive from either Tamarindo or San Jose. It is a must see for first time visitors to Costa Rica as it has an abundance of beautiful sights to see and explore! If you love wildlife, fauna or volcanoes, you cannot miss this place. Whether you are on a shoe string budget or want to travel in style, there are many options for you to explore.

Personally, my favorite thing to do is visit one of the many hot springs in the area which typically have an amazing view of the volcano and spend the entire day eating local cuisine and just chill out the whole day with my family.

Last month we went in style and boy, was it fun! The place we stayed at has 26 hot springs on the property, a wildlife refuge, awesome water slides, plus a variety of restaurants. The service was world class!

If you are an adventure seeker, you will not be let down because you can zip line across waterfalls, do world class white water rafting, hike spectacular nature trails and see incredible birds the whole time all in one day!

However, this is also a beautiful place just to sit on the porch and do nothing all day. Warning- this is a RAIN FOREST! So bring a poncho and some shoes that can get wet. I find it hilarious to look at reviews on trip advisor where people complained about the rain. Por favor…

After a few days in Arenal, you will know the meaning of Pura Vida!!!!
