An idyllic town on Costa Rica’s North-Pacific coast, in the sun-drench province of Guanacaste, Tamarindo is what many consider the perfect destination for retirement: Stunning beaches. A vibrant international community. Rich culture. Vast natural beauty. And that’s just the tip of the sandcastle.

Retiring in Tamarindo, Costa Rica: 7 Compelling Reasons

From its stunning beaches to its vibrant community, Tamarindo has everything you need to make your retirement dreams a reality. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, basking in the warm tropical sun, and immersing yourself in rich cultural offerings and the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Beyond the town itself, Tamarindo is nestled in the heart of Costa Rica, a country known for its lush landscapes and abundant wildlife. Picture yourself hiking through tropical rainforests, spotting exotic birds and monkeys, and exploring the diverse ecosystems that make this region so unique.

Here are a few more reasons why you might want to choose our sunny coast as your next home:

#1: An International Community

Tamarindo International Community

Tamarindo boasts a vibrant and welcoming community of all ages. It’s the perfect place for retirees to connect with like-minded individuals and engage in a wealth of activities – most of them, outdoors! From yoga classes on the beach to lively social events, you’ll never run out of opportunities to make new friends and create lasting memories.

#2: It’s Affordable

Costa Rica can no longer be considered a bargain-basement destination, but you can still get some excellent bang for your buck.

As a retiree, your housing needs are still very dependent on your lifestyle, whether you’re in the market to downsize into an empty-nester’s condo or searching for a retirement home large enough to host the family. Hey, if you offer it, they will come… and they will want to come to Costa Rica!

More on the topic of retirement homes, in a moment, but for now, we’ll leave it at this: The cost of living in Tamarindo for retirees is fairly affordable – budget $2,500-$5,000+ per month for a comfortable lifestyle – and homes (from cozy condos to sprawling ocean-view villas) range from $150,000-$2.5M+.

#3: The Weather is Close to Perfect

Tamarindo Weather Close to Perfect

Tamarindo is beach town central, which means you can expect year-round daytime temperatures from about the mid-80s to the mid-90s (29-35º C), with a cooling to the high-70s or low 80s (25-28º C) at night.

Beyond the temperature, it’s important to note that Tamarindo is in Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s driest province, which is a major plus when you consider that rainy season humidity in other provinces can hit 80-90% humidity; the dry weather here can make a huge difference in your comfort level.

If you suffer from joint aches and pains, our heat and relatively drier weather can be a serious comfort-saver. Additionally, our slightly drier climate is still rainiest during pollen season, thus tamping down those flying allergens and helping many allergy sufferers.

#4: Walk Everywhere!

Walk Everywhere Tamarindo

Maybe you’re not much of a walker but if you are – or if you want to enjoy a more active lifestyle, after your move – then might love this aspect of retiring in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.

First things first: We wouldn’t quite call anywhere in Costa Rica a “walker’s paradise.” That’s because Costa Rican infrastructure isn’t quite at the level of many other countries. That said, even without the perfect sidewalks and bike lanes, Tamarindo is definitely a walkable beach town.

Not only is downtown about a mile from stem to stern, with everything you need, concentrated into a few packed blocks, but Tamarindo also enjoys a slower pace than much of the world. Cars share the road – with aplomb, mostly – with the bikers and the walkers and the skateboarders, and all the other non-driver/pedestrians throughout town.

So you really can walk from home to the beach or the restaurant or the grocery store, any time you please.

#5: And Everything’s Right Here

Tamarindo convenience for retirement

While we’re on the topic, here’s another advantage of compact Tamarindo: Live here, and you have access to a small town with bigger-town amenities. That means that everything you need on a near-daily basis, you’ll be able to find right here.

And for everything else, there’s Liberia. And we do mean, everything else: If it’s available and you can buy it in Costa Rica, there will almost certainly be a store that sells it in Liberia, just 90 minutes away. (And hey, for everything else, there are freight forwarders!)

#6: Fly Home in a Heartbeat

For many, the hardest part of retiring in Tamarindo, Costa Rica is being away from friends and family back “home.” For every holiday, every birthday, every milestone, or just because, you’ll have many reasons to return.

So, choose to live somewhere where you can return, any time you please. Here, you’ll be thankful you live just 80 minutes from one of Costa Rica’s only two international airports: the Liberia International Airport (formerly, Daniel Oduber International Airport), code: LIR.

To put that in perspective, consider the airport commute from other popular beach retirement spots: Nosara (2.5 hours), Arenal (3 hours), Manuel Antonio (3 hours), Dominical/Uvita (3.5 hours), Perez Zeledón (4 hours), the Osa Peninsula (Sierpe: 4.5 hours), and the southern Caribbean (5.5 hours).

#7: Access to Major Medical

retiring in Tamarindo Costa Rica Access to Major Medical

It may not be a favorite topic but it’s no secret that major medical is an important concern for everyone, and especially for seniors. When retiring in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, rest easy knowing that you’ll have easy access to everyday healthcare, including general practitioners, pharmacists, and maybe a handful of specialists.

That said, major hospitals aren’t always as easy to access. And that’s where Tamarindo can shine: you’d be about a 90-minute drive to Hospital San Rafael Arcangel, the premier private hospital in Guanacaste. You’ll also have easy access to the public CCSS hospital in Liberia.
